Survivors – How They Did It

The prognosis for survival for mesothelioma isn’t good. In fact, at one time, just hearing the diagnosis was almost a certain death sentence. However, with new treatment and more understanding of this form of cancer, the rate of survival increases.

In order to increase your potential survival rate, it pays to look at the practices of those that managed to whip this devastating illness and come out victorious. It is a fight for your life or the life of your loved one so come armed to the battle with as much information as you can possibly have on the different stages of mesothelioma, mesothelioma pain, mesothelioma alternative treatment and mesothelioma cures.

James Rhio O’Connor was one of the mesothelioma survivors. When he found out he had the disease, his doctor told him that not only was the tumor inoperable because of its location, chemotherapy wouldn’t dramatically improve the length of his life and definitely reduce the quality of his time left. They gave him less than a year to live. Rhio decided that he simply didn’t accept the doctor’s prognosis and set about to heal himself with diet, supplements, spiritual guidance, determination and mind-body medicine.

The road wasn’t easy for Rhio, he had tough choices and a disciplined regimen but that didn’t stop him. As the first year passed, he proved the doctor wrong without the dramatic effects caused by chemo. When he passed the second year mile marker, he knew he would make the doctors eat their words and through his strict determination and alternative medicine, he managed to live for seven and a half years after his diagnosis, dying at 69 years of age.

In the mean time, he enjoyed over six and a half years more with his family than the doctor predicted or modern medicine could provide.

Paul Kraus is another survivor of mesothelioma and may be the best-known survivor. He wrote a book called “Surviving Mesothelioma and Other Cancers: A Patient’s Guide.” In June of 1997, Paul received his diagnosis of peritoneal, abdominal mesothelioma, which the doctor told him was just as lethal if not more in many ways to the pleural form of the disease. He had no pain but a swelling of the abdomen, which the doctors presumed, was an umbilical hernia. During the surgery, the doctors discovered the cancer throughout his abdominal cavity.

The doctors only gave Paul a few months to live and told him the chemotherapy treatment wouldn’t extend it by much, if at all. Like other cancer and mesothelioma survivors, he decided on pursuing life rather than waiting for death. Paul began with inspirational reading to steady his mind and eliminate some of the stress but soon moved to actual types of treatment.

Luckily for Paul, his family doctor was far more educated than most in alternative treatments and was a holistic general practitioner. With the help of the doctor and dramatic changes in his lifestyle, he attacked the mesothelioma vigorously.

Of course, he did it with a positive frame of mind. Paul’s first change in lifestyle began with diet and juicing. He began with the juice from carrots, beetroot and greens four or five times a day. He eliminated sugar, processed foods and focused on eating mostly raw food, but not exclusively raw food. He took herbal supplements, focused on exercise, supplemented with amino acids and took a form of non-acidic vitamin C.

In addition to the many physical changes at home, he also focused on affirmations, prayer groups and some additional helpful therapies provided by his holistic doctor such as intravenous vitamin C injections. His doctor also helped him find places to receive ozone therapy and Ukrain therapy.

Ozone therapy

Ozone therapy removes the blood from the veins, ozones the blood with a machine and then the practitioners return the oxygenated blood back into the patient’s body.

Ukrain therapy

Ukrain therapy uses a combination of ingredients but the primary ingredient is the juice of the Greater Celandine, a plant similar to poppy. Taken alone, the alkaloids from the plant are toxic but in the combination, they’re safe to the normal cells. There is minimal after effects of the drug. A study in Poland, Austria and Germany involved giving the drug to healthy individuals. Aside from some localized pain, increased thirst, urination and some drowsiness, there were no other side effects or long-term effects. However, there has been a great deal of success with cancer victims.

Paul has turned his few months to well over 12 years. He notes that he’s remained stable, has a good quality of life and occasionally, particularly once after a stressful family situation, goes back on the ozone and Ukrain treatment, but otherwise maintains his health with diet and supplements.

There are other case histories where patients simply refused medical treatment for the disease and whether they sought lifestyle changes, did nothing or found alternative treatments the doctors don’t know. All the doctors know is that the patients with mesothelioma and no traditional medical treatment lived between seven and fourteen more years, regardless of the doctor’s prognosis of under a year.

Attitude

Attitude plays a huge part. Your attitude can result in a healthier immune system. Belief that you’ll survive is part of the battle. This doesn’t mean that people die due to their own lack of belief. That would be blaming the victim rather than focusing on a solution. It means there are many different choices to make and your doctor’s choice isn’t necessarily yours.

If your doctor offers a negative outlook, you can choose to accept it and give up or fight like the dickens for your life. Fighting for you life involves learning to accept your situation, making changes in diet, increasing exercise regimens and sometimes looking at options you wouldn’t normally consider.

Chicken soup

If you select an alternative medicine, make certain it won’t hurt you. While science is just now finding that chicken soup does have chemicals that can help with the common cold, mothers knew it for years. The mothers also knew that it couldn’t hurt anyone to eat chicken soup, so even if it didn’t help, it didn’t harm either. When taking alternative measures, use chicken soup as your guide. Only consider options that can make you healthier. If you want to feel sick after treatment, you still have the option of traditional chemotherapy. Don’t make the alternative just as bad. Changing your lifestyle and mental attitude can help your immune system overcome the disease. Finding a doctor that supports you is important. If your oncologist gave up hope, find a new doctor that will help you in your personal struggle against mesothelioma.
